Matthew 12:28-29 in The Message reads, “But if it’s by God’s power that I am sending the evil spirits packing, then God’s kingdom is here for sure. How in the world do you think it’s possible in broad daylight to enter the house of an awake, able-bodied man and walk off with his possessions unless you tie him up first? Tie him up, though, and you can clean him out.”

What an amazing scripture! There are several things that jump right out from this passage, the first being how the enemy is able to invade someone’s family, house, or personal life in broad daylight, take on an able-bodied man, tie him up, and walk off with his possessions. The last phrase here says, “tie him up, though, and you can clean him out.” We see this over and over where men, Christian or not, lack the strength, resilience, and fortitude to resist the enemy at all costs. The enemy will tie you up with wrong priorities—a moment of distraction, lust, greed, overachieving, too much time at work, or trying to keep up with the family next door. The enemy will tie you up with the things that don’t matter to clean you out of the things that do; he aims to destroy your life, family, children, or career. Don’t let the enemy tie you up!

It’s been said things that matter most should never be at the mercy of things that matter least. Finding God, following God, and being full of God should be the priority of every God-man. Luke 4:1 (KJV) says, “Jesus, being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from Jordan.” Then in verse 14 it says, “Jesus returned to Galilea in the power of the spirit.” One verse speaks of God’s character and nature, the other speaks to carrying out His will. If we are going to be men filled with God’s nature, we’re going to have to full of the Holy Spirit, full in every way so that there is no room for other things to get in. When we’re full of God’s character and nature, then we will return to our Galilea in the power of the spirit. Every day there is a new set of challenges. Every day there are new demands. Are you facing those demands in the power of the spirit, or are your empty of God’s power and spirit and moving forward in your own character and strength?

It’s been said that the unmotivated are impervious to the obvious. So as leaders, let’s show them what they have become. We need to be motivated individuals—motivated in the spirit and motivated after God—or else we will be that able-bodied man God has set up in authority but tied up by a thing that allows the enemy to clean house.

Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Every day it takes a fresh appraisal. Where is our heart? Where are our thoughts moving us towards? Examine and open your heart. Open heart surgery is the necessary responsibility of every child of God.
